Gavin Patterson, the BT Group’s CEO, has just announced that the firm plans to migrate every customer to the IP network by 2025. This move will see the eventual switch off of PSTN and ISDN networks, requiring all businesses to transition their telecoms to an IP-based service. You can read the announcement in Comms Business.
At first glance, this decision looks like the cause of disruption. After all, a 2013 report showed 3.2 million ISDN channels still operational in the UK. However, at Loop Voice and Data, we think it’s a long overdue transition that will bring huge benefits to every customer.
With SIP lines and VoIP, it’s quicker and easier to provision new lines, port numbers, and ensure the highest call quality. Businesses can scale their usage up and down, relocate to a different office, and reduce the costs associated with legacy networks.
By 2025, every business will get the advantage of IP-based telephony. That can only be a good thing. Of course, the transition won’t be easy.
